New Agrarian School
2021 Internship Opportunity
Applications are now being accepted for a seasonal internship position at the New Agrarian School. This position is for someone with blacksmithing and/or building experience to assist in constructing and maintaining the infrastructure at the school, as well as increase their experience with blacksmithing by working in a fully equipped shop and attending classes. Projects will include camping structures and cabins, sawing lumber from timber on the grounds of the school, building and upgrading the forging facility, making tools, grounds maintenance, gardening, and general assistance in running the school. Interns will have access to the shop for personal work when classes are not in session, and be welcome to participate in three classes over the course of the summer at no charge. When not participating in classes, interns are expected to work approximately forty hours per week. During classes, interns will need to work about ten hours per week.
The School, while emphasizing Blacksmithing, is committed to cultivating self-reliance in both craft and living. Interns will be part of this growing exploration of the power of craft in a rural setting to support a meaningful way of life. The place is a work in progress, and interns can expect fulfillment in part from simply participating in that ongoing work.
Simple accommodations are provided. This summer that means living in a classic 1975 Airstream travel trailer in the camping area of the school with solar electricity, propane appliances, and running water. Interns will receive a stipend of eight hundred dollars per month for the season running from approximately May 1st through September 30th. As well, during the growing season, produce is available from the substantial garden.
